Target offers first-ever denim trade-in program—just in time for back-to-school

With back-to-school shopping officially in full swing, saving a few bucks is no doubt on the top of every parent’s priority list this year. Thankfully, Target is easing the sting on your wallet by way of its first-ever denim trade-in program, offering a 20% discount on new denim purchases in exchange for your old pairs.

Now through August 10, shoppers can bring in up to five pairs of denim from any brand, in any condition—yes, no matter how tattered or worn they may be. After placing your pairs in the marked recycling boxes, you’ll score a 20% Target Circle promo code for any new denim purchase, including Target-owned brands like Universal Thread, Wild Fable, Goodfellow & Co, Cat & Jack and national brands like Levi’s.

The company will recycle all previously-worn denim, giving it new life instead of having it end up in landfills, and the whole family can head back to school in fresh new styles. This limited-time promotion builds on the success of Target’s Car Seat Trade-in Program, which has recycled 2.6 million car seats and 39.7 million pounds of materials since 2016, according to a press release announcing the news.

“Our new Denim Take Back Event is an easy way for families to give their used denim a new life,” says Gena Fox, Target’s senior vice president of merchandising for apparel and accessories. “With back-to-school and college shopping top of mind for families, we’re offering this 20% off Target Circle deal to make it even more affordable for our guests to refresh their denim wardrobes, while also doing our part to reduce waste and keep used denim out of landfills.”

To take advantage of this sweet deal, you’ll want to snag your family’s old denim soon, because the 20% promo must be used by August 10. That said, there are other retailers with similar denim recycling programs available year-round in case you miss this one. Madewell offers $20 off a new pair for each pair you bring in, while rag & bone offers a 25% same-day discount for any pair brought to their in-store locations. H&M allows you to bring any old clothes or textiles—from any brand and in any condition—to their stores in exchange for a thank-you coupon.

Given that a reported 2.16 million metric tons (that’s 4,761,984,863 pounds, FYI) of denim waste ends up in landfills around the globe each year, every little bit helps to ensure that fabric and textiles can be given a second life whenever possible. Helping reduce waste and giving your kids a stylish start to the school year? We’d say it’s a win-win all around.
